Frequently Asked Questions
[contests]
Are scholarships awarded for outstanding performances at any level?

No, scholarships are not awarded by the USABO or the IBO. Private and university-supported scholarship committees often look favorably on accomplishments in the competitions, though. Performances in the USABO and IBO are excellent distinctions on any résumé.

Do students have to take AP Biology before taking the exams?

No, students do not need to have taken AP Biology or any other biology class. Some individuals study for the exams independently and do not receive any biology instruction from their schools. Biology classes are definitely helpful but not mandatory.

Can students compete multiple times in the USABO?

Yes, students can compete as many as four times in the USABO, once each high school year. Performing to a certain level one year, though, does not guarantee that a student will reach that same level in following years. Some previous National Finalists have attempted to return to the Finalist Camp but only advanced to the Semifinalist Round. Other finalists, however, have successfully returned and then competed in the IBO.

Can non-U.S. citizens compete?

Yes, non-U.S. citizens can compete in the USABO/IBO provided that they are green card holders who have lived in the U.S. for at least 3 years. Regardless of citizenship status, all participants agree to represent the U.S. at the IBO.
